The Young Knives Process
Craftmanship
Every knife Sandy makes is completely handcrafted from scratch, each process is undertaken by Sandy using British sourced materials. Sandy also create custom made and personalised leather sheaths for bushcraft knives, sgian dubhs and neck knives, all hand tooled and hand painted. Each new blade goes through a design process before being hand cut from 1095 high carbon steel. This is followed by various stages of grinding the profile and onto the process of cutting the bevels of the blade, a process done fully by hand. At this stage, if requested by the client, I carry out the file work on the spine of the blade using needle files, again fully by hand. I run the blade through a series of heat cycles to de-stress the steel prior to fully heat treating the blade and quenching in oil. The blades are triple tempered (at 200c to relax the steel back to RC 59/60. Ideal hardness for chefs knives) followed by hand sanding the flats and bevels of the blade up to 400grit finish (sometimes up to 2000grit for mirror finish). All the knives are put through various tests to ensure they are shaving sharp before being sent to clients. Check out the YoungKnives YouTube channel for videos of knives being made. |
